Well Guys I'M DONE FOR ~ :banghead:

After taken all the body parts off the bike myself and having the bike custom painted. After locating and buying missing screws/bolts/etc,etc. Going back and forward to HomeDepot/Lowes
and all the rest ~ I'M DONE !!!

Its true I haven't started the bike in about four (4) yrs. do to a little thing called CANCER of the kidney and some other parts they took out. I've recovered well SO-FAR.

    Now here's what happened:

In the back of my mind I'm wondering if the PISTONS ARE CEASED after all this time of not starting her-up.

I would check on the bike on our back patio and notice an oil leak from under the bike. Not having the strength to do anything about it; I let it lay.

Little do I know at the time the OIL was leaking from a oil breather I had installed many, many years ago and for what reason I cant remember. Lets not forget I bought the my Electra Glide Classic brand new in 1985.

O.k. I'm ready to have the bike re-painted. Still wondering if the bike is going to start.

The bike had no oil due to the constant leaking thru the years coming from that DARN OIL BREATHER. I put new oil and oil filter on the bike.

How I tested if the pistons would turn I did this:

Got a wire coat hanger and straighten it out and made it to come out of the spart plug hole about 3ins. I put tape right at the beginning of the hole where the wire hanger rested. So I could tell if the rear piston moved up and down. I jack-up the rear wheel and put the bike in gear and hit the starter. And LOW AND BEHOLD THE WIRE MOVED UP - INDICATION THE REAR PISTON

IS NOT CEASED. I didn't test for the front piston figuring if the rear one move I'd be O.K. ~ and GOD said, " YEAH RIGHT

Now I thought I was home free ~ WRONG

I put the spark plugs back and pumped the throttle a bit and I hit the starter.

Well the engine made the rrrrr sound and then came THE KNOCKING
AND the knocking. Not being a motorcycle mechanic I know I was in trouble.

Little did I know as I was trying to start her up; My wife yelled out to my from the livingroom; " Honey there's OIL COMING OUT OF THE BIKE "

I stopped hiting the starter and look-over the right side of the bike on the patio floor was: LOOK AT THE PHOTOS.

I need your imput guys; I know its bad but I don't know how bad.The start works, got a brand new battery in there, new oil and filter like I said.

Really Dumb Question To Ask: What is causing that KNOCKING.

Remember the rear pistons did go up and down. Why wouldn't the front piston move ALSO

    After ALL that work !

    I'M DONE, FINISHED & DEPRESSED !!!

O.K. guys I'm in your hands tell me what you think ?
P.S. About that darn oil breather what should i do about it ~ GET RID OF IT :banghead:

well from the looks of it & from you saying it sat without starting it for about 4 yrs , sounds like the check ball in the oil pump is stuck , that's what making it leak oil out the breather , if your not sure on how to fix it (you will need the service manual ) , the knocking is from no oil getting to the top of the engine ( it's running out the bottom)
Good to here your feeling better from your Big C hope all that works out good for you, remission wise :D
schooner if your not a fix it man find a locol indy shop call around & see or check with any body you know who ride & ask them about Indy shops some H D dealers will try to stiff you or say we don't work on the older bikes , good luck on both your health & your bike

these engines can take a lot it might not be toast
(Unless you want it to be so you can buy a new one LOL)

    Check ball might be stuck

I can't tell where the oil is coming from other
than it's a lot on the ground.

Is that a filter back there by the breather? FWIW I doubt it's the breather,

It almost looks like the drain plug wasn't in tight and oil came out.

was it pumping out of the breather?

What You Say Sound Very Good 2 Me

    Hey cowboy :)

So from what you say it might be: CHECK BALL IN THE OIL PUMP IS " STUCK " :banghead:

Now my good man I do have a shop manual for my '85 Electra Glide Classic.

Is there a way I can repair/replace the part

Here's what another guy told me what to do:

    1. Remove both spark plugs.
    2. Drain new oil from oil tank.

    3. Crank motor to let oil pump remove old oil from crank case, filling oil tank with old oil P.S. I DON'T KNOW WHY HE WOULD TELL ME TO DO THAT
    4. Drain tank a second time. P.S. WHY AGAIN
    5. Refill oil tank with new oil
    6. Replace spark plugs.

What do you think about what he said
Allthough I like what you are suggesting ;)

By the way THANKS for you well wishes 4 me about the Big C that was in my right kidney; so far so good :)

What he's saying is you are overfilled

The check ball can stick open, letting oil fill the engine
cases, "sumping" HD engines are basically like a dry sump
where the oil is maintained in a separate unit and pumped
into the engine to lube and returned.

It's more often happening on a softail as the oil tank is elevated and
gravity does it's job, remember gravity is the law...

Drain the oil keep track of it, you might try turning it over to see if it pumps
oil back into the tank, you could drain half the oil and then do it if you dont' want
to crank it dry if he's wrong.

You should see the oil tank fill back up and it's 4 qts for that bike not 8 so
if it had sumped you have full cases (DO NOT REMOVE the drain plug from the cases)
unless you are really sure of your abilities as if you strip it you are looking at new case halves. It's not a drain plug.

Yes it was the breather leaking

    :banghead:Hi hotroadking :)

From what some of the guys are telling me it just might be: CHECK BALL IN THE OIL PUMP that might be STUCK :banghead:

I don't know if I can repair or buy new one
We'll see what else the guys got to say about helping out of the HORRIBLE situation

    Thanks 4 your concern ;)

Schooner, your oil bag is under the side cover on your model, right??After 4 years all the oil sumped into the cases,it happens ,they all do that LOL....when you turned the engine over most of the oil puked out of the crankcase breather and since you refilled your tank first there was way too much oil in it and it had nowhere else to go except out the crank breather, because your oil tank was full...check ball may be stuck....maybe not...drain the tank add about 1 quart of oil turn the engine over it'll probably puke some more, don't worry it'll also pump the oil back up to the oil bag, then drain the oil again and add 3-3 1/2 quarts don't fill to full mark on dipstick....
If there was gas in your gas tank, you'll want to drain and maybe flush that too....carb will need a good cleaning (I'd suggest an upgrade to a CV carb and manifold)
I would say your bike is fine, just needs a little TLC to get it up and running....fresh oil all around, engine tranny and primary...fresh fuel and new plugs and a cleaned carb it'll fire right up.
It'll probably leave it's mark for a while, don't worry it's an 85 it's old enough to leak if it wants to LOL.
If you can beat the Big C....this is nuttin...

i agree with lucifer there aint nothing wrong with that motor it sumped . his breather is under the bike and that oil ran down the frame and the hose. that knocking was the lifters that were empty . hook a charger to the bat pull the plugs shut the fuel off drain some oil and crank the hell out of it it will get the oil out of there then re fill

Yap I forgot the oil bag is mounted on the right side of his 85 :( , but these guys are right , the oil will run into the engine & it's called sumping the reason to pill the spark plugs is to let the engine turn over a lot easier , battery charger on it to keep the batt from running low while cranking all you will need to be cranking ( a lot ) & all the above explained the oil good luck & ask away with any questions you have

Yep leave the exhaust and check ball alone
once it gets under pressure it will fix itself (maybe)
worse case is it drains down and pukes more
then you take the cam cover off to fix...

    Drain it down
Put a qt in as said,
crank it over and let it puke and fill
the pan, drain it out, make
    sure it's cleaned out and
put in 3 qts start, get running
and check the level and top it off if needed..

    oh and

    they all do that....

When all is said and done only check the oil when it is hot this will keep you from over filling it. Good luck with the BIG C

Yep ! I did do just that ~ Over-Filed The Oil Tank

    Hey bushwackerhd :)

Yep that just what I did ~ over filled the oil tank. I pumped it out;install a new spring in the oil pump. The CHECK BALL is in GREAT CONDITION and needs no replacement.

I gaped the plugs to 40
And It did start and NO OIL came out from anywhere. The problem is its rough starting her.

It runs and bit ( What A Beautiful Sound :) ) I've always have a problem with starting her. I've heard that one can CHANGED THE JETS on my carb. But that will be later, right now I've got troubles of my own getting my Harley running smoothly.

My plan ( Ha! Ha! ) is to get the bike running smoothly as the bike is still up on the lift with its rear wheels off the patio floor. Run thru the gears and get the bike nice and HOT.

Then see if ANY OIL COMES OUT ANYWAY. If NO OIL then I would say that the oil pump and check ball are GOOD. Until I made that test I'm still NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET :banghead:

I want to THANK YOU AND ALL THE GUYS on this forum so far, with hanging in here and bringing me alone till the END of this DRAMA :witsend:

schooner if you have her running & no oil leaking out your good to go , if she sat for the 4 years run some good carb cleaner in her lucis is some good stuff let her run for a while , if your not up to riding yet leave her on the stand & point a house fan at her & let her run , rev just a little , this will help clean out the carb , or if you can just take the carb off & take it apart & clean her out :D good to here no more oil flowing out

I wouldn't recomend running it threw the gears when on your lift (remember what can go wrong probably will) a friend of mine did it once and when it fell off the lift he realy had a problem. If you have a freind you can trust let him take it for a few short rides around the block. Drain tank and carb and put in fresh gas and then go for a ride it will do nothing but good for it.

Gotta agree with that. Running through gears on jack is not a good idea

The Bike Is Up IN THE AIR

    Hey Guys

No worries the bike is up in the air held by my ENGINE LIFT.

I wouldn't DARE try that on a jack.

I might be a little just a little dumb BUT I'M NOT STUPID :banghead:

Thanks guys for your concern anyway.

    And the saga continues.

The Harley runs for about 20 or 30 seconds then DIES :banghead:
