Fouled a set of plugs 90 mi. out of Daytona Bike Week '88 on the '78 Shovel. Luckily, a more seasoned rider carried a spare set for his '86 Evo. Got to the local H-D shop where they suggested using H-D 5RL's('80-82 Shovels) because they were a HOT plug. The electrode extended past the end of the threads more than any plug I have ever seen before and since .(see pic) Was concerned about the valve and/or piston clearances but said not to worry. Put them in and been using them ever since. Went to the local dealer recently but have been discontinued:angry:. Strolling thru Walmart and saw some Autolites #985's(sold in packs of 2 @2.95 a pack) with same thread reach which & looked like the same extended electrode. So I finally got to ride with my Dad.

We left the SF Bay area at noon, after I rode out there about 300 miles that morning to meet him for the beginning of "our" run up to the MT Shasta area (Dunsmuir, to be precise).

As it was his first long run in about 40+ years, I let him set the pace and took up on his six, mainly to keep the tailgaters off him as they didn't like my loud-azz V-H Pro-pipe - gotta love 'em! He (72 years old on a real quiet BMW 850R) was below speed limit for the first 100 miles or so. Saw his shoulders hunched and tense and was worried. Made a gas stop, then later a food stop, and with the thinning traffic I saw him relax more. Another gas stop in Redding and he was back in youth form - as we hit the twisties in the mountains I could see the joy was...

When they checked my cam chain tensioners before my trip they said they were worn, but OK. They were more concerned that the cams were getting worn and suggested that as a winter job. Someone here recommended the gear driven cams, which sounds good to me. At 68K miles, I have no issues with that.

I was also thinking about going with a big bore kit and getting a little more power. The problem is that I have to go with the dealership. The only other guy around here that does motor work is a total ass. He doesn't charge any less, and you have to stand around and listen to him insult you and every other idiot who's bought a new motorcycle at a dealership in the last 20 years. I just don't want to give him my money. At least at the dealership they're friendly to me.

Got a deal I couldn't pass up although I have gotten all kinds of conflicting information. Here's the deal, I picked up a chrome swing arm, both front/rear wheels, tires, brake calipers, chrome pulley, and chrome belt guards, rear axle, lower legs off of a 2003 Heritage for $625.00. My questions are concerning mounting all this on my 1999 Fatboy (early model) with Evo motor ? I know I'll have to get a narrow belt (150mm tire) , LOL...LOL but first I want to know if it's gonna fit and what about things like the pulley ratios how will the larger pulley affect my transmission and top end speed, will I need to space out the front pulley. I guess if I get it on I'll worry about the fender clearance then : )
