With the compression on my stock 88 incher, do I really need to run premium gas? I mean the compression is not even 9.0:1?

Hi all,

I just bought a beautifully restored 71 T500. All is good but for one thing - It is a real pain to start. Now, I am more then aware that motorcycles of thie era take a little patience but this is really playing up. Also it occasionally cuts out whilst cruising...

So far I've checked the plugs - their fine. The amount of oil going into the cylinder - (its a 2 stroke so my thought was oil was dirtying the plugs) thats fine. Battery is near new.

Only thing I think it could be is the generator... not supplying power to the battery properly causing it to go flat. There was an issue where the indicators dont work properly at low revs which I think points to this issue.

Would anyone know how to properly test the generator? And how to fix or restore it?

After a whole lot of back and forth of negotiating with a bank to whom owns a house that My family needs, we were successful and have FINALLY agreed on terms. All that is left is to get the home inspection done and close. About time, this was exhausting.
